David Tieu, from Westerly, R.I., is a member of Cedar 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 3 is made up of eight people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“I want to develop new skills and knowledge,” David said, when asked why he joined NCCC. He also wants to “show my friends and family that I really care for the life of America and the people.”

David brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful in his role as a Corps Member. He has skills in researching, reading, and critical thinking. He also has previous teaching experience and a basic knowledge of cooking.

Prior to NCCC, David had graduated from the University of Connecticut in December of 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. He also graduated from Westerly High School in June 2008. After finishing the program, David has many options. He is considering applying for Teach for America, applying for a museum internship, or applying for graduate school to further study anthropology.

Just a few weeks prior to starting his commitment with NCCC, David did a little bit of work in his home state. “I volunteered for beach clean-up at the Rhode Island town beach after the impact of Hurricane Sandy,” he said.

Cedar 3 is currently on a project that runs from July 15 to August 2 with the Science Station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The team is assisting there with experiential learning at a science based summer camp program by serving as classroom assistants and organizing supplies for the camp.
