VINTON --Heartbreaker...no other way to put it...it was a heartbreaker.

The 15th-rated Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes (11-2) dropped a intense gut-wrenching 59-56 overtime WaMaC West battle to Clear Creek-Amana at the Garrison Fieldhouse.

After a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Vikettes led 53-50 in the waning seconds of regulation. With six seconds to go, the Clippers tried to get the ball inside, but the shot rimmed out. In the fight for the ball, it was tipped out beyond the three-point line at the top of the key and into the hands of CC-A's Calia Clubb. Clubb kind of flipped the ball toward the bucket and with the buzzer sounding, the ball went in, sending the game to overtime.

The Vikettes led pretty much the whole game, holding a seven-point (11-4) late in the first quarter and an nine-point (26-17) margin with two minutes left in the second. But the Clippers managed to cut the the lead to 28-24 at the half.

V-S lead 42-41 going into the fourth quarter, which quickly turned in a contest of trading baskets.

The Griffth girls -- senior Kayla and sophomore Alyssa -- led the Vikettes with 16 points each. Lucy Howes-Vonstein added eight, Aza Swayzer added seven, Brylee Bruce four, Abby Davis three and Ashlie Meyer two. The Vikettes were hampered the whole game with cold shooting, especially from the free-throw where they were just three of 11.

The Vikettes get back in action Friday night as they host 4th-rated Center Point-Urbana at the Fieldhouse.
