On Sunday, President Biden released a statement announcing that he will not seek reelection. The statement reads in part, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term." He will address the nation later on this week.

With pressure mounting from his party, the handwriting was on the wall. With several missteps reported over the last several weeks during attempts to bolster his support, the party felt it would be better for him to step down.

The assassination attempt on former President Trump didn't help his poll numbers either.

In a post on X (Formerly Twitter), Biden endorsed Vice President Harris saying, "My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this."

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, everyone voted in the Democratic Primary to elect Joe Biden and it feels like democracy is being destroyed out of fear by the party. On the other hand, it makes sense if the numbers are down. At last count  31 Congressmen and four Senators so far had officially asked him to step down. The media has turned on him like a rabid dog these last few weeks. It hasn't been fun to watch, if nothing else I felt a bit sorry for him. Once everyone has decided that he was out, there was nothing he could do.

Vice President. Kamala Harris would not be the first black woman to run on the Democrat ticket. The first was Shirley Anita Chisholm from New York. She was nominated by the Democrat party in 1972.

There's a lot of speculation that Michelle Obama will step up, or Gavin Newsom, California's Governor. We'll see. The Democratic National Convention takes place in Chicago August 19–22, 2024.

So pop some popcorn, and we'll find out in August who Trump will be facing in another debate.
