To The Editor,

As someone who occasionally submits comments to the opinion page, I would like to ask the editor to abide by their own rules that are placed on the "Leave a Comment" page which a person has to click to agree before submitting the comment. These rules are:

  1. Your name is required
  2. Be polite
  3. Will you wish that you wouldn't have said this tomorrow? If so, edit your comment
  4. Disagree politely with ideas shared, don't make it personal
  5. Vinton Today has the right to refuse any comments that are deemed inappropriate

Unfortunately, these standards are being ignored by the editor allowing personal attacks between writers. These attacks do not further any relevant conversation about the topic, they only provide people an opportunity to malign others. Freedom of speech does not mean that it is ok to make personal attacks on a public site. Please return to the standards that you have already have in place. I also encourage those writing letters to stop the personal attacks and only respond to the subject that is being discussed.

PK January 20, 2024, 7:19 pm Rosemary...Most of us realize that our comments and our opinions will be agreed with by some and disagreed with by others. I believe that there aren't enough "real punches" thrown to cause anyone to jump up onto a chair with a rope around their neck. Speaking just for myself, I have never submitted an editorial or comment that I regretted the "next" morning!

I think Val does a super job considering ALL we throw at her.

Speaking of STANDARDS...What's wrong with wanting an America who treats their senior citizens, poor families, and vets as well as we do Biden's millions and millions and millions of illegal immigrants???
GB January 20, 2024, 7:33 pm Must be getting really hot in the kitchen for some..
GB January 20, 2024, 7:40 pm Rosemary, you are the last one who should be crying about standards and complaining about accountability .. Just saying..
GB January 20, 2024, 10:18 pm PK, very well spoken! Thank you.
PK January 21, 2024, 3:33 pm Standards??? The most honest and intelligent man just dropped out of the Republican race. America has once again lowered its standards to Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The impressive man I met on my front lawn last August will get the Presidency after Trump leaves. Today, I am very sad!!!
JS January 22, 2024, 6:19 pm Rosemary - take your own advice. Be pleasant and fair. Your slander on me (as is the rest of the team) is growing thin.

SJW January 24, 2024, 6:40 pm Good thing for you there are no rules against poor grammar. Makes the English teacher in me cringe.
LV January 25, 2024, 12:23 pm I think the names need to be added back on instead of just initials. People have become more aggressive because they can hide behind the fact their name is not attached. I grow more and more frustrated that people, not just on VT but world wide sling trash, bash, insults, we need to stop this trend. Be kind, think first before you write.
