Donald “Don” D. Logan, 78, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Born March 8, 1948, in Manchester, Iowa, to Paul and Florence (Odell) Logan, Don was raised as a hard worker on the family’s farm, surviving both polio and a severe truck accident. A pivotal moment was Don’s chance encounter with a Central College admissions representative during high school, which led to him playing football and graduating from Central in 1970. During his time at Central, Don met his wife, Janet “Jan” Dykstra, and they were married on June 28, 1969. Don went on to earn his Master’s degree from the University of Iowa.
Don was a dedicated teacher, guidance counselor, and coach for the Benton Community School District for over 36 years. He was a leader in the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association for over 40 years. In addition to his service to these two organizations, Don was a trustee and a lay speaker for the Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne. Don served the community through his membership in the Van Horne Lions Club, on the Board of the Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation, and on the Foster Care Review Board for Benton County.
Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. One of his greatest joys was attending his grandchildren's activities, as well as trout fishing, reading, and watching basketball and football.
Don is survived by his wife, Jan (Dykstra) Logan of 57 years; his daughters, Emily Logan and Alicia (Todd) Rausch; his grandchildren, Annika Rader, Brendan Rader, Vivienne Hauschild, William Rausch, Mason Rausch, and Logan Rausch; his siblings, Bev (Lou) Lyness, Susan Johnson, Bill (Sue) Logan, Sharon (Dan) Stewart, and Diane Logan; his mother-in-law, Alice Dykstra; and his brothers-in-law, Curt (Connie) Dykstra and Larry (Sandra Stroo) Dykstra. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Florence; his siblings, Linda (John) Backof and Leland Logan; and his father-in-law, Ralph Dykstra.
Don’s dedication and devotion were unwavering until a stroke on April 27, 2026. As Don’s family walked with him through his last days, there was a celebration of his unconditional love, loyalty, integrity, and wisdom in this exceptional man.
Visitation will be at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the church with Pastor Annie Walker officiating. A luncheon will be held at the Van Horne Community Room following services. A memorial fund is being established in his name.
