Obituaries : Mary Rae Van Dorn

Mary Rae Van Dorn, 81, of La Porte City, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at her home in La Porte City.

Mary Rae was born on May 15, 1944, in Waterloo, the daughter of Raymond and Marjorie Kupka Spotts. She graduated from Columbus Catholic High School in 1962, and later earned her Associate Degree, then a Bachelor Degree in business from Upper Iowa University.

She married Joseph Van Dorn in 1968, they later divorced.

Mary Rae was an Administrative Secretary at Covenant Medical Center, retiring in 2008.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mary Rae enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, photography, collecting antiques, cooking shows, reading books (especially medical mysteries), and loved spending time with family.

Mary Rae is survived by her children, Brian (Carolyn) Van Dorn of Crystal' MN, Scott (Wendy Valentine) Van Dorn from Iowa Falls, Heather (Joe) Schoenberger' La Porte City' and Sean Van Dorn of Rochester' MN; six grandchildren, Gage, Chase, and Isaac Schoenberger, Joey Repp, Hope Valentine and Xavier Van Dorn; two sisters, Patsy Sumner of Waterloo and Linda (James) Sawyer of Cedar Falls.

Mary Rae is preceded in death by her parents.

Services: 1:00 PM on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Locke in La Porte City, La Porte City.

Visitation: 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Friday, January 2, 2026, at Locke in La Porte City, La Porte City.

Memorials may be directed to the family, a fund will be established.
