On Thursday, October 19, 2023, Thomas "TJ" George Johnson, loving husband and father of two sons and two stepdaughters, passed away at the age of 74.

Tom was born on August 27, 1949, in Vinton, Iowa to George and Belva (Tharp) Johnson. On September 19, 1992, he married Jane Vaske Northrup.

TJ, known by his many friends, worked for Benton County Roads for 35 years. Prior to working for Benton County, he worked at Hawk Built until they closed. He also worked with Dwayne Johnson Auctioning Services.

TJ was also an excellent carpenter, building and designing his own home for him and Jane. TJ also was an excellent floor tiler, installing backsplash and re-doing bathrooms.

TJ had a passion for restoring his 1957 Chevy, going to car shows and helping with the annual Vinton Cruise for several years. He also was a familiar face cruising the Cedar River on his Jon Boat. He was also known for his Garbage Can Suppers, which he hosted an annual Father's Day celebration with family and friends. After retirement he bought his dream toy, a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. He loved his joy rides with his other bike friends. Another venture for Tom was helping Randy farm. He looked forward to every spring and fall to get the crops in and out.

TJ was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kind compassion to always help his friends and family. He loved football games, car racing and playing pool and visiting with his many friends.

TJ was preceded in death by his father George and his mother, Belva, four infant brothers and sister and grandson, Lucky Thomas Wilson.

He is survived by his wife Jane, his two sons, Michael and Daniel Johnson, his two stepdaughters, Stacey Ruth and Tracey Podhajsky. Grandchildren, Holly (Trevor) Sevey, Savannah (Brandon) Hall, Angelica Ruth, Zade and Drake Podhajsky, great grandchildren Marcy and Brody Sevey. His sister Kathie (Jerry) Adams, stepsisters Lee Fennern and Carol Rehder, cousins, nieces and nephews and his in-laws Linda Gilson, Betty (Steve) Demeulenaere, Kay Wood, Don (Sharon) Vaske, Joe Vaske, Mary (Ron) Snell and Mike (Elaine) Vaske.

The visitation will be on Friday October 27th from 4-7 at Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton. Funeral services will be at the Wesley United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday October 28th. There will be a visitation for one hour prior to the service. The burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton Iowa. A Celebration of Life will follow at the American Legion with a meal, donated by the Vinton Cruise committee, to all who wish to join them.

Memorials may be directed to the Wesley United Methodist Church or the North Benton Ambulance Service for a ventilator.
