Obituaries : Steven “Steve” Payne

Steven "Steve" Payne, 75, died Friday, July 28, 2023 at Mercy One in Mason City. There will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2023 at the Mt. Auburn Legion Hall. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.

Steve was born February 28, 1948 in Waterloo, the son of Robert and Shirley (Quinn) Payne. He attended school in La Porte City. On October 15, 1966, he was united in marriage to Laura Reninger in Janesville. He was employed by John Deere in Waterloo for 32 years. He then worked for Mt. Auburn Grain as well as helping local farmers.

Steve was a car enthusiast, enjoyed working with horses, welcomed foreign exchange students into his home, loved teasing his grandchildren and sitting in his swing under the maple tree.

Steve is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laura; three sons: Larry Payne, Gene (Diane) Payne and Tom (Katie) Payne; daughter, Louise (Scott) Fleming; thirteen grandchildren: Megan (Ryan) Peterson, Cody Payne, Hannah Kim, Rebecca Payne, Jason Payne, Jeremiah Lee, Christopher, Alana, Katelyn and Madison Fleming, Jamisen Payne, Livia Watts and Adrien Watts; four great-grandchildren: Gracelynn, Casen, Raelynn and Octavia; and three sisters: Sandra Hayungs, Regina (Jeff) Christenson and Ramona Wolfe.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial fund has been established.
