Robert Louis Lathrop, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday May 11, 2022, surrounded by his family. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until service time. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum with full military honors. The Rev. Jayme Glenn-Burns will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Coleen Lathrop; his children, Joseph (Angela) Lathrop of Ankeny, and children, Jessica and Abby; Charlie Lathrop of Des Moines, and children, Sean (Sydney) Lathrop, and their three children; Michael Lathrop and Gena Lathrop; his sisters, Susan Wagamon and Sandy (Gary) Feaker, all of Cedar Rapids; mother-in-law, Darlene Werning of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Carol (Danny) Lee of Bethany, Mo., and Karen (Chuck) Fountain of Vinton; a brother-in-law, Darrell (Laurie) Werning of Vinton; stepfather, Robert Steuber of Cedar Rapids; his best friends, Addison Copeland of Marion and Michelle McAreavy of Marion; and his beloved fury pets, Babydoll and Sasha Ann. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Herbert Lathrop and Ruth Pauline Steuber; father-in-law, Robert Werning; sister, Sylvia (Roger) Parry; brothers-in-law, Larry Wagamon and John Werning; and five beloved pets.

Robert was born July 18, 1951, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Robert and Ruth (Levy) Lathrop. He is a graduate of Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. He married Pam Kasner on Sept. 5, 1970, in Cedar Rapids. They later divorced. He then married Coleen Werning of July 4, 1987, in Vinton, Iowa. Robert worked as a railroad conductor for the Milwaukee Railroad, a security officer for Merchants National Band, CAS operator for the Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant and part-time for HyVee food store. Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In 2021, Robert was honored and proud to be on the Oct. 5, 2021, Honor Flight. He also appreciated his wonderful neighbor, and personal Uber Driver Mel Burt. He enjoyed working in the yard, an avid runner and animal lover. He loved war movies and drinking Pepsi.
