Walter J. Nelson, 90, of Vinton, formerly of Springville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, from a long illness.

Born the son of Fred and Katherine (Nyman) Nelson on Jan. 15, 1931. Walt worked for years in construction with his father until he left for the U.S. Army in 1950. He served his country in the Korean War 1951-52. He married Doris Lee White on July 9, 1955 in Rutland, Vermont. They returned to Iowa to live and start their family. Walt worked for 31 years at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids. He then delivered papers for the Pennysaver.

Walt loved to fish, hunt and he played a mean game of bingo. He loved spending time with his family. Walt is survived by his children, Steven (Lynda) of Cedar Rapids, Dave (Ladonn) Garrison, Pam (Rick) Parmater of Vinton, Scott (Nicole) of Marion and Paula of Vinton. He had 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren a brother, Wayne; a special friend, Doris; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters and a grandson, Joshua Nelson.

The Nelson family would like to thank the staff at Vinton Lutheran Home for his wonderful care.

Family will be holding a private graveside service.
