Janet Velicer died peacefully with family members present on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at her retirement community in Lenexa, Kan. Known as an avid lifelong reader, dedicated educator, lover of the musical fine arts and world traveler, she was 80 years old.Jan was born Janet Frances Schafbuch in 1941 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to parents Geraldine and Allan Schafbuch.

Ty John Casey

Ty John Casey, 39, passed away May 13, 2022. He was born Jan. 20, 1983, in South Korea. That date and the name of Tae Min were given to him when (approximately) at the age of three, he was found in Pusan City, South Korea, alone and assumed abandoned. He then lived in orphanages until Feb. 13, 1988, then through Holt International Adoptions he arrived at the Des Moines Airport to meet his new family, who welcomed him with open arms.

Marion Isbell

Marion Isbell, 96, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the Vinton Lutheran Home.Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2022 at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home in Vinton. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.Marion May Waldorf was born August 28, 1925 in Estherville to Horace and Florence (Cable) Waldorf. In 1930, the family moved to Vinton where they purchased the Palace Theater.

Betty Rae (Underwood) Brown

Betty Rae (Underwood) Brown, 86, of Manchester, Michigan went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.She was born at home on August 23, 1935 in La Porte City, Iowa to Ralph and Gertrude (Cooke) Underwood. At age 16, Betty Rae trusted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior which changed her life completely. Betty Rae graduated from Dysart High School in 1953 and went on to attend Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada.

Mary Ann Thorman

Mary Ann Thorman, 100, Blairstown, Iowa, passed away dearly loved by her family on May 16, 2022 at Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab in Vinton, Iowa after an extended illness. Services will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Blairstown, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2022 with Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown with Military Honors by the Blairstown American Legion.

Deanna L. (Anders) Kerker

Deanna L. (Anders) Kerker, 59, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2022 due to complications of long term Covid 19.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.  A celebration of Deanna’s life will also be held at a later date.

Peggy M. Schmelzer, 72, of Kewanee, died Sunday, May 15, 2022, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. Peggy was born March 17, 1950, in Council Bluffs, IA, the daughter of Warren T. and Barbara M. (McCann) Krehbiel. She graduated from Notre Dame High School, Burlington, IA, and attended Scott Community College, Burlington, IA and Black Hawk College.

Steven Charles Schwab

Steven Charles Schwab, 72, of Belle Plaine, Iowa passed away May 13, 2022 at his home surrounded by family.Steven was born May 3, 1950 in Belle Plaine, IA to Charles Henry and Gladys Mary (Hoyt) Schwab following the passing of his mother he was raised by his father and step-mother, Dorothy (Kramer) Schwab. Steve graduated from Belle Plaine High School the class of 1968.

Jerry Wayne Keel

Jerry Wayne Keel, age 65, died Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at his home in Shellsburg, following a short illness. Per Jerry’s wishes, he will be cremated and will have a private family burial. Jerry was born on June 24, 1956 at Vinton to Wilbert and Audrey (Husted) Keel.  He graduated from Shellsburg High School with the class of 1974.  Jerry worked as an electrical technician at Rockwell Collins prior to completing his degree and starting his own business, Keel Electric, in which he repaired TV’s, stereos and small appliances.

Robert Louis Lathrop

Robert Louis Lathrop, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday May 11, 2022, surrounded by his family. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until service time. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum with full military honors. The Rev. Jayme Glenn-Burns will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
