The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District proudly recognized its 2026 retirees and annual award recipients during a special Awards Ceremony and Public Open House held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at the Vinton Skate Center. The event was planned and sponsored in part by the Vinton-Shellsburg Education Association (VSEA).
The event celebrated the outstanding dedication, service, and contributions of employees and community members who have made a lasting impact on students and families across the District.
2026 Retirees Honored
The District recognized eight employees retiring at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 school year, representing a combined 181 years of service to education and the Vinton-Shellsburg community:
Michelle Patterson – 32 years
Jeannine Peyton – 29 years
Lois Martin – 26 years
Shelly Flickinger Williams – 23 years
Jennifer Janssen – 21 years
Dee Jeray – 17 years
Dale Snapp – 17 years
Nancy Levis – 16 years
These individuals have devoted their careers to supporting students and strengthening the District’s schools. Their commitment and service have left a lasting legacy, and the Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District extends its deepest gratitude for the impact they have made on countless students.
2026 District Award Winners
Teachers of the Year
Jill Reeve – A special education teacher at Tilford Elementary, Reeve was recognized for her dedication to students, staff, and the school community. She creates a supportive, engaging classroom where students feel valued and uses individual interests, encouragement, and connections such as Armani, the district therapy dog, to enhance learning. Reeve is also a leader among her associates and a strong advocate for student academic and emotional growth.
Cherie Neblung – Neblung was recognized for her commitment to student success and her consistent support of colleagues. She is known for ensuring every child feels cared for and supported while maintaining a balance of warmth, structure, and high expectations. Neblung’s dedication has made a lasting impact on students and staff across the District.
Friend of Education
Carol Sexton – Sexton received the Friend of Education Award for her exceptional support of Tilford Elementary and its Viking Spirit Store. During the 2025–2026 school year, she generously donated nearly all store items and volunteered extensive time to support students. Her ongoing kindness and commitment have strengthened the school community.
Support Staff of the Year
Shelly Flickinger Williams – Williams was named Support Staff of the Year in recognition of more than 23 years of service to the District. She begins each day driving a school bus before serving as a trusted presence at Northport, supporting students, staff, and families. Williams is known for going above and beyond to support students through fundraising efforts that provide opportunities such as celebrations, art experiences, and essential needs like glasses. Her compassion and dedication have made a lasting impact on the school community.
The Teachers of the Year award recognizes excellence in teaching and student impact. The Friend of Education award honors community members who strengthen schools through their support. The Support Staff of the Year award recognizes outstanding non-certified staff contributions that support student success.
