Vinton Today was contacted by a concerned citizen about what could be considered a scam being pulled by salespersons in our county targeting veterans especially. If a company contacts you playing on that "veteran" theme, be wary.

As with any "sales" call, visit, email or other communications soliciting for you to purchase a product or service, beware. If you have not contacted the company first, be extra careful before doing business with someone who found you.

If you are approached by ANY salesperson who contacts you to sell you anything, it's okay to be rude and hang up. It's okay not to open the door if a stranger is on the other side. Understand that these salespeople are counting on you wanting to take care of your family, and they will play on your duty to them.

Also, be aware that if you are a senior citizen, you are always going to be the first target of these companies.

In most cases, you can buy local and save a little.

I know our local Veterans Affairs gal is ready to answer any questions you might have at ANY time about ANYTHING. Veterans, never assume a salesman knows more than your local Veterans Affairs office when it comes to your eligibility for FREE services. Contact the local office at 319-472-3150 and speak to Cara Martin who will happily discuss your options with you.

Most veterans might know that things like a headstone and other services might be available to them FREE because of their service, but some may not. To see what sort of things might be available to you, contact the local office and speak to Cara who will happily discuss your options with you.

Be careful out there!
