Two seniors-to-be will represent ECI REC in Washington, D.C., June 14 to June 20. They will join approximately 1,500 other youth who are also sponsored by their RECs, to visit historical sites, explore the Smithsonian Museum, meet congressional leaders, spend a day on Capitol Hill, cruise down the Potomac River, and learn about American history and government.

Ben Hyland, son of Pat and Laurie Hyland from Vinton, is excited to travel to the capital. A junior at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, Ben enjoys sports and has participated in basketball, track, football, cross country, and baseball, and is a Red-Cross-certified life guard. He also sang in choir and chamber choir, is a member of the National Honor Society, and attends St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Rachel Wheelock will join Hyland and other youth from across the country on the Youth Tour. Her parents are Todd and Teresa Wheelock from Rowley. A junior at Independence High School, Rachel has a 4.0 GPA and is active in concert, jazz, pep, and marching band. She is junior class vice president and also runs track and varsity cross country. Outside of school, Rachel is active in 4-H and Girl Scouts.
