Just a little over a year ago, local resident David Gates performed in a play at the Palace Theater called "Meet Me in St, Louis." He played the part of Grandpa Prophater at that time. He will reprise the role in a performance at the Theater Cedar Rapids. "Again, I have been "type-cast," said Gates, "They needed someone 'older' to be Grandpa and I certainly meet that definition. I needed to be able to walk, talk or sing, and chew gum at the same time (well maybe not chew gum) and dance (I do sort of...)" he joked,

Gates was cast for the part in the performance which will play at the Theater from November 18 through December 18.

The play is set in the summer of 1903, and everyone in the Smith family eagerly anticipates the opening of the 1904 World's Fair. Over the course of a year, the family's mutual respect, tempered with good-natured humor, helps them through romance, opportunity, and heartbreaks. The musical includes seven of the best-loved songs from the Judy Garland film, plus additional songs written especially for the stage, including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "The Boy Next Door," "The Trolley Song," and "Whenever I'm with You."

The production contains moving lights, haze, brief onstage fight gestures, and brief discussions of offstage fighting. The Theatre recommends the play for ages 7+

The theater is located at 102 3rd St. SE in Cedar Rapids.
