In celebration of Iowa Ag Week and as part of his annual visits to every county, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig visited Benton County on Wednesday, March 26. Secretary Naig, middle in a green jacket, visited Genosource near Blairstown. He learned about the farm and company and toured their Visitor Center near Blairstown. Genosource is a very innovative farm and genetics company that just celebrated their 10th anniversary at this location. Their dairy just added a state-of-the-art milking parlor, which includes more than 4200 dairy cows that are milked three times per day. They hope to increase their herd in the near future. Genosource is globally recognized as a leader in cattle genetics, with approximately 50 of the top 100 ranking Holstein bulls in the world. They sell bull semen globally to about 60 countries. They produce about 18,000 embryos per year, which eventually grow into heifers and milk cows that will increase the productivity of the Holstein breed. Secretary Naig was impressed with the innovation of this Iowa farm and ag business.
