Grant Sagan scored his 1,000th point in his last regular season high school game, as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings overcame a rough start to defeat Oelwein, 65-50.
Early missed shots and turnovers by the Vikings, along with three-pointers by the Huskies, gave the visitors an early 17-6 lead. The Vikings trailed by nine after the first quarter, at by 11 early in the second. But regained the lead just before the end of the first half. They then fell behind by one before building a 20-point lead. The Huskies cut the final margin to 15 in the final minute.
Despite struggling early, Grant Sagan led the Vikings with 15 points.
When he passed the 1,000-point milestone by hitting a 3-pointer, Coach Joe Johnson called a time-out, and the Viking fans celebrated the milestone by waving yellow signs and holding up large numbers. Max Kearns, Max Griffith and Chris Merchant also recorded double-figures on the scoreboard.
The Vikings host Independence in first-round District action next Monday, Feb. 18.
