The Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team escaped last week’s road trip with its undefeated record intact.

The Vikings built a 35-23 half-time lead at Center Point-Urbana, but needed every one of those 12 points to hold on for a two-point win, 59-57, last Tuesday. Then on Friday, they traveled to Marion, where they won by 8, 70-62. That game, however, was tied at 32 at halftime.

The Vikings have won their first six games by an average of 18.8 points, which ranks them 4th in Class 3A in that category. Individual leaders include Max Kearns, who is second in Class 3A (and 11th in all of Iowa) with 45 assists. Grant Sagan is tied for 9th in scoring in Class 3A, with 111 points after six games.

The Vikings were ranked 4th in Class 3A in last week’s poll but are expected to move up this week after losses by higher-ranked teams. Those rankings are released each Monday afternoon. The Vikings host South Tama tonight and Benton Community Tuesday.
