The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap Team finished its 2012 season with a 9th place finish at the Iowa High School State Trap Championships, and ranked 10th overall in the statewide league standings. A total of 903 shooters, representing 88 Iowa High schools, competing in over 180 5-person squads competed in the all day event held at the Cedar Falls Gun Club Saturday. Sophomore Wyatt Lebeda lead the Red Cedar Shooters in individual scoring with 97 out of a possible 100 targets broken, earning him a 10th place in individual standings for the day. Lebeda’s shooting included a perfect 50 straight from the 16 yard line, his second of the season and his second 50 straight at the State Championships, making him one of only 12 shooters of the day to do so. Other individual stand-outs for the day included Junior Hunter Vogt with his first ever 25 straight from the 16 yard line, and a season best score of 87/100, and Sophomore Drake Tilson with a 25 straight from the 16 yard line, his first ever at a State meet, and 5th of the season. A total of 86 perfect 25-straight stages were recorded for the day by all competitors. Clay Target shooting is one of the fastest growing High School sporting events in the State. In 2009, a total of 50 squads competed in the State Championships, in 2011 the number had more than doubled to 115 squads. Nearly 1,800 individuals participated in the State league this year.
