The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes are tied for the best record in all of Iowa high school softball at this point. The Vikettes are 8-0, and have outscored their opponents by a margin of 101-20.

"We are now 8-0, and off to a very good start," says coach Bari Parrott. "We have been hitting the ball extremely well up and down the line-up, which has made a huge difference for us this year. We have also done an excellent job in our walk to strike out ratio helping us get on base and score more runs. Our line-up is pretty balanced right now being led by Ashley Strong in the middle of the order -- she already has hit three home runs and has driven in close to 20 RBI's."

Vikette pitching has been solid with both Maddie Cornell and Lindsay Noren off to 4-0 starts on the mound, says the coach. Each have given up just six earned runs in four games, and has kept opponents to batting averages around .200. Noren has already struck out 31, with just five walks.

Coach Parrott said team depth helps create more winning opportunities.

"Fourteen different players have started games so far this year and we have used several different line-up combinations. We have a very competitive and balanced group of kids which is fun because it allows us to play some people in more than one spot to adjust our line-ups around," says Parrott.

The Vikettes host Center Point-Urbana at home tonight, in a double-header that was rescheduled due to a conflict with the district soccer game.
