Sports : Vikings, Vikettes in Des Moines for State Track Meet

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings and Vikettes who earned a spot in the 2012 State Track Meet left Vinton Wednesday for Des Moines, where both Vikings and Vikettes will compete in five events at the State Track Meet which begins Thursday.

The Viking shuttle hurdle team members (Nolan Edwards, Ryan Webster, Darrin Charlier and David Richter) continued a VSHS tradition by getting brightly-colored Mohawk hair styles. The track team left in two school district vans.

The Viking 4 x 800 relay team (Nolan Sagan, Keyn RIckels, Chase Overton and Wyatt Lyons) won first place, set a school record and advanced to State during last week's District meet in Vintn. Sagan earned an individual spot in the 800M; Rickels advanced to state by winning the high jump; and Lyons will compete at State in the 1600M.

The shuttle hurdle relay team placed third in districts with a fast enough time to qualify for the State meet.

Alternates for the Vikings include: Gunner Tranel, Tanner Spies and Max Griffith.

Vikettes making the Girls State meet include Cheyenne Barnes (100M and 200M), and the 4 x 100, and 4 x 200 teams. Sydney Robertson, Dawn Schminke, Maddy Springer and Barnes run on both teams. Payton Leonard also qualified in the 400 open event.
