Sports : Young Vikings begin basketball season with 4-1 record

Heading into the final weekend of 2011, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team -- with just one senior -- has compiled a 4-1 record.

The Vikings defeated Benton Community 62-49 on Tuesday. They have also defeated Maquoketa, Center Point-Urbana and Marion. Their only loss was at Western Dubuque.

Grant Sagan leads the team in scoring with 71 points, followed by Max Kearns, Max Griffith, Chris Merchant and Kelyn Rickels. All are juniors. Jake Milroy is the team's only senior

The Vikings end December contests with games at Waterloo Columbus on Friday and at South Tama next Tuesday. They resume action after the Christmas break when they have three home games in a row. They will host Williamsburg, Independence and Union on Jan. 3,5 and 6.
