After the first three weeks of the season, there are new leaders Class 3A, district 5.

Maquoketa and W. Dubuque are tied at 3-0 in district play, while Marion, Central Clinton and Union are tied at 2-1. Under the tie-breaking system, Marion and Union would be considered the third and fourth place teams. Vinton-Shellsburg, Anamosa and Center Point Urbana remain winless in district play.

The Vikings look forward to Homecoming and hope for their first District 5 win of the season vs. Anamosa this Friday after another tough loss. Marion defeated V-S, 27-0, last Friday in Marion.

Maquoketa, which plays at Union on Friday, has outscored its opponents 172-15 in its last four games. After a 24-21 loss to W. Delaware in the season opener, the Cardinal defense has allowed just one touchdown in four straight wins. Maquoketa defeated Mount Vernon, 37-6, Vinton-Shellsburg 58-6 (the Vikings' only score was on a kick off return), Center Point-Urbana, 41-3, and Central Clinton, 36-0.

Union running back Wes Burnside returned to action after an injury kept him out of last week's loss, but he only carried the ball six times. Despite the limited action, Burnside ran for 62 yards and two scores.
