The Union Knights continued their winning ways Friday night with a district opening 56-7 victory over Center Point - Urbana in La Porte City.
Union is now in 3A D5. The Knight defense gave up only one score in the second quarter and were led by seniors Dylan McLaughlin and Cole Hinders have 10 tackles each. Senior defensive lineman Kyle Ansley helped out with six tackles followed by four each from Brian Dunkelberger, Trev Hadachek, and Shay Fehl. Hadachek also had the big play of the night with a 47 yard fumble return scoop and score. The stingy Knight defense gave up only 153 yards in 45 plays. On offense, Wes Burnside continued to roll behind a strong performance by the offensive line. Burnside had 20 rushes for 154 yards and four TDs. Hadachek meanwhile contributed on the ground with 82 yards in seven rushes and also was 7 of 11 for 114 yards and one TD. Hunter Zempel was the leading receiver with three catches for 53 yards and Hinders also had two catches for 44 yards and one TD. Overall the Knights had 411 yards on offense with 46 plays. In the special teams department, Zempel had three returns fro 56 yards and Burnside had one kickoff return for 51 yards. The Knight defense forced eight punts by CPU while the Knights did not punt the whole evening. It is the second game in a row that the Knights have not punted. Union's next game is at Central Clinton - Dewitt.
