Sports : Vinton Kiwanis 5K Race brings celebrities: Updated

Run, Forrest!

Ryan Tresnak pushed a shopping cart carrying 120 pounds in support of the Backpack Program during the Kiwanis 5K on Saturday

This past weekend Vinton enjoyed yet another Boomfest/Boomtown weekend. Kicking off the weekend was the Kiwanis 5K race. The race raised funds for the backpack program that provides additional foods on the weekend for struggling families. 

The highlight of the race was Ryan Tresnak who ran representing Fareway. While he may not be a celebrity outside of Vinton, he's a hero here. He ran pushing a shopping cart that contained three 40 pound bags of salt. Each bag of salt represented a single cart full of donated groceries purchased by shoppers. Fareway made promotional videos concerning the race encouraging residents to fill the shopping cart at the store. A little more than 160 pounds of food was donated to the backpack program by shoppers. (Even Ryan's sister from Florida did her part to make it a bit tougher by shopping at Fareway online for food to donate to the program.) 

Hats off to Ryan for his effort (and the blisters that he earned) to raise donations for the kids.

If you listened carefully, you also heard one of the runners saying things like, "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get." That would have been Forrest Gump running! He came in first in his age category, which I might say seems a bit young!
