Welcome to another round of Views from the Grandstands from the birthplace of the IMCA Modified.
Tonight is our Mother's day special in which additional prizes were drawn from Mother's tickets as well as a limited number of flowers provided to all Mothers courtesy of the folks at Ron Da Voo Lunge and Deli. It was a tad nit windy and I was concerned if the track was going to hold up. To me, it looked like the best track we had all year as it ws dry slick from top to bottom, with no holes or ruts that plagued the track earlier in the season.
The first feature up was the IMCA Hobby Stocks. 17 of the 18 cars on hand started the feature event with Jeremy Floyd leading from the pole. It looked like Floyd had matters taken care of but bobbled just enough off the bottom to allow Jacob Keiser to stick a nose in with two laps to go and take over the lead. Scottie Pippert was also able to get by Floyd and at the flag Keiser beat Pippert by half a car length. The win spoiled Pippert's streak of winning every feature so far in the Hobby Stock class and Keiser picked up a $50 bonus as well. Floyd, Rod Grother, and Nathan Christie rounded out the top 5. Heat races were won by Christie, Grother, and Vince Bucholz.
Next up was the Sport Compacts with 20 cars set to go at the drop of the green flag. It took two times to get a lap in the books, but once it got going Steve Meidke was the class of the field. Lap traffic would play a key role during the contest as Meidke got tied up in lap traffic on the white flag lap which passed the lead over to a hard charging Bill Whalen, Jr, but Meidke would get back around Whalen in turn 4 and cross the finish line first. Whalen finished second with Brett Vanous, Brad Chandler (in a borrowed James Stevens car), and Merv Chandler the top 5. Heat race winners were Bryce Bailey, Brandon Klein, and Whalen, Jr.
The IMCA Northern Sport Mods were next with 24 cars checking in tonight. Just like the Hobby Stocks, it took 2 tries to get a green flag lap in the books. Kurt Hogan lead early and would not let six cautions slow him down as he scored the victory. Jim Buhlman finished second with Curt Hilmer, Jake Strayer, and Ken Kositsky the unofficial top 5. Heat races were won by Hogan, Buhlman, and Danny Dvorak.
Next up were the IMCA Stock Cars. 12 cars were on hand. Thomas Thompson was the early leader until Justin Temeyer passed him around lap 6. Temeyer would go on to win with Nathan Wood, Norman Chesmore, Bob Ahrendson, and Curtis Roster the top 5. Heat races were won by Thompson and Temeyer.
The final event of the night was the "Knights of Thunder" IMCA Modifieds. 16 cars were here tonight. Troy Cordes took off from the outside pole and would lead the feature flag-to-flag. Lapped traffic allowed Joe Docekal to close in on Cordes, but not enough to challenge for the lead. Scott Hogan finished third with Brandon Banks and Ronn Lauritzen the top 5. Heat races were won by Hogan and Banks.
I believe the track crew has done an outstanding job with the racing surface and I believe this will help improve the car counts. Also please note that the track will come alive with the sounds of racing this Tuesday night for the HDT (Hawkeye Dirt Tour) for IMCA Modifieds with hots laps starting at 6:45. Grandstand admission is $12. Support classes are IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Sport Compacts.
