The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters trap shooting team participated in a double invitational on Saturday in Cedar Rapids. The team competed with several other Iowa schoos of all sizes in an invitational at the Otter Creek facility northwest of Cedar Rapids.

David Ervin had the top V-S score, hitting 45 of 50 in one of his rounds.

Coach Brendan Knutson said the team was led by a veteran in David Ervin shooting 87/100 targets, but two of the top five individuals are freshman and first year participants in the Iowa High Trap Shooting competitions: Wyatt Lebeda, 85/100; and Drake Tilson 82/100. Tilson led the team in its qualifying in practice to earn the starting spot on the black team, with a 42/50 score.

The players battled heavy and gusty winds along with some rain and wet conditions.

Over all the team shot pretty well considering the weather conditions which shut down most all other HS activities that were to occur outdoors.

Our next competition is Saturday April 23, when we host the first of two home meets at the Red Cedar Izaak Walton League, 1.5 miles north of Vinton on Highway 150.
