Tuesday night the Stormin' Vikes travelled to Williamsburg for a showdown with Wa-Ma-C rival Williamsburg along with Oskaloosa and Centerville. What was anticipated to be a tight battle with a significantly improved Williamsburg squad ended up as a solid victory for Vinton-Shellsburg. With a number of guys stepping up and swimming new events for the first time to fill out the line-up, the Stomin Vikes saw a number of time drops and big performances.

The evening began with some familiar contributors Bradyn Schlief, Carter Kirtz, Ian Allsup and Ian Vrba soundly winning the 200 Medley Relay. Their season best time of 1:45.58 moves them into 15th place in the State. Wesley Farrell followed that with a win in 200 Free with a new personal best time and the Vikes were off to the races. Farrell also won the 100 Back later in the meet with a two second time drop for yet another personal best.

Other event winners on the night was the team of Schlief, Vrba, Kirtz and Allsup in the 200 Free Relay and Allsup in the 500 Free.

One of the big stories of the night was the contributions by guys up and down the line-up. Freshman Broden Farrell and first-year Sophomore Brayden Beck each swam the 100 Fly for the first time scoring important points for the team. Beck also scored points with a 6th place finish in his first 200 Individual Medley. Junior Stephen Wichtendahl and Sophomore Thomas Jessen each scored points in swimming their first 500 free and 200 free respectively. While we won the meet by 78 points, it was contributions by these guys and others such as Ryan Williams (5th in the 500 and 8th in the Breast), Emmitt Colsch (8th in the 100 Back) and the 400 Free B Relay of Beck, Hunter Kempton, Wichtendahl and Williamsthat made the difference. Without those points, we couldn't have won this meet.

The team will be right back into action with one more meet Friday night before heading into the break. They will travel to Decorah to face the host Vikings as well as Waterloo, Mason City and Grinnell.
