With the stroke of pen Wednesday, Luke Beyer transitioned from a Viking to a Warrior.
Beyer, a 5-9, 195-pound senior hard-hitting linebacker for the last two seasons for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, signed his national letter of intent to play college ball at Waldorf University, flanked by his parents, Gary and Bonnie Beyer of rural Vinton. The decision to go to at the Forest City-based school came after visits to eight or nine other Iowa schools.
"I really liked the coaches (at Waldorf) and got to know some of the players," Beyer said. "That's what really did it for me."
Beyer is currently penciled onto the Warrior roster as a linebacker, but he said that is not carved in stone.
"They talked about me playing cornerback, or even free safety," he said. "I'll play anywhere."
Also at the signing were Viking head coach Jim Womochil and assistant Don Lyle.
"It's an honor," said Womochil, "to have someone who's been involved with your program go on to play at the next level, especially a high level such as Waldorf."
Waldorf University is a member of the North Star Athletic Conference that also includes Dakota State (SD), Dickinson State (ND), Mayville State (ND), Presentation (SD),and Valley State (SD) for football. Last season, the Warriors played non-conference games against Briar Cliff (IA), Dordt (IA), and Wisconsin-River Falls.
