Back at the beginning of this amazing 2019-20 girls' basketball campaign, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes lost a 51-47 road game to Solon. It was Coach Rich Haisman's first loss as head coach and came on a night when the Vikettes converted on just 11 of 31 free-throw attempts.

Saturday night the Vikettes went back to Solon and came back with a far different outcome. Behind 28 points junior sharpshooter Lucy Howes-Vonstein, V-S led wire to wire, blasting the Spartans 64-55 in the opening round of Class 3A Regional play. The Vikettes (12-10) now advance to Wednesday's Regional semifinal at Monticello against the host 12th-rated Panthers (17-5). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

V-S led 16-11 after one and 31-26 before pulling away in the second half.
Howes-Vonstein was 10 of 21 on the field, but an amazing four of seven at the three-point range on her way to her season-high 28. Kayla Griffith added 12 points and sister Alyssa Griffith added another eight. Senior Taryn Sutton, who'd been under the weather all week came literally out of her sick bed to make seven of eight free throws for seven important points. Abby Davis added five points and Brylee Bruce and Kaitlin Meyer came up with two apiece.
Bruce led the Vikettes with six rebounds with each Griffith adding five each. Senior Davia Herger dished out three assists to pace the team there.
The win also clinched the first winning season for the Vikette program in a gloomy decade that had seen the once dominant program win just 22 games in the last eight years.

A win Wednesday will advance the Vikettes into Saturday's Regional final at Center Point-Urbana.
