The Storming Vikings season will continue as Sophomore Carter Kirtz led the team with a second place finish in the 100 Breaststroke and qualification for the single-class state meet next Saturday. Kirtz registered the 9th best time in the state with a 1:00.48.
On the day the team registered five new team records and turned in new personal best times in 30 of the 34 swims.
The day began with the Medley Relay of Bradyn Schlief, Kirtz, Isaac Allsup and Cyrus Elwick setting a new team record of 1:43.96 in finishing 5th. This bettered the previous mark of 1:45.09 but regrettably was a mere 0.83 seconds shy of qualification for state.
Other records that fell included Kirtz and Allsup bettering their records in the 200 IM and 100 back respectively. Allsup's time of 56.90 earned him a spot on the podium in 5th place.
Cyrus Elwick broke the school 100 free record of 50.09 with a mark of 49.15 leading off the 400 free relay. The relay of Elwick, Ian Allsup, Isaac Allsup, and Kirtz broke their previous record with a new time of 3:31.30 and a 5th place finish.
Elwick also made podium appearances with a 5th in the 50 free and a 4th in the 100 free.
Overall the Storming Vikings were 5th out of 8 schools, finishing ahead of Newton, Waterloo, and Williamsburg while trailing Indianola, Cedar Falls, Marshalltown and District Champion Des Moines Dowling.
