Faced with their third game in four days, without their leading scorer, taking on the number 10 team in the state Class 4A, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes had a tall order to fill Thursday night in the Garrison Fieldhouse.

But by the time the game ended, Coach Rich Haisman's scrappy band threw a true scare into Central DeWitt before falling, 53-46.

The Vikettes (10-9 overall, 6-4 in the WaMaC West), were down 15-6 after one period and were down 22-8 midway through the second, a margin the Sabers (16-1) maintained at the half, 31-17.

Central DeWitt was up 48-32 with five minutes to go in the game when a funny thing happened; the Vikettes went on an 11-1 run that cut the lead to six and forced the Sabers to bring their starters back in the game and the visitors held on for the 53-46 win.

Taryn Sutton put on another solid performance, as the scrappy senior paced the Vikettes with 17 points, including a clutch 13 of 15 shooting from the free throw line. Freshman Alyssa Griffith scored 11 while junior Kayla Griffith added 10. Abby Davis added three, Kyla Jeffery and Kalie Burke two apiece and Brylee Bruce added one. V-S played the game without junior sharpshooter Lucy Howes-Vonstein, who was under the weather.

This long week for the Vikettes finally wraps-up Friday when they host Class 4A's 4th-ranked team, the Stormin' Pointers of Center Point-Urbana.
