Coach Brian Sheston's Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers got off the 2019-20 season to a fast start over the weekend with a pair of solid performances, highlighted by Saturday's showing at the Monticello's Guilford Invitational The Vikings crowned a pair of champs, two runner-up finishes and three thirds on the way to a fourth-place finish in the meet. Setting the pace were 138-pounder Bryce Radeke and 220-pounder Chris King who captured gold. Radeke dominated the field, scoring a pair of falls and a solid 7-1 decision to roll to the title to roll his season record to 5-2. King stomped his way through the competition, needing just five minutes and 55 seconds to crush five foes four falls and a technical fall, on his way the title. Viking 132 pounder Brady Ortner moved to 6-1 with his second place finish, while 145-pounder Jimmy Mull brought home silver with three pins. In addition 160 pounder Curtis Erickson, 182-pounder Luke Beyer and 195-pounder Taylor Anderson all garnered bronze. Brandt Ortner finished fourth at 152. The Vikings will be home Thursday night to host Alburnett, Clear Creek-Amana and South Tama in a triple-dual at Garrison Fieldhouse beginning at 6 p.m.
