A solid night for VSU as we traveled to Grinnell last night. VSU was 2nd of 4 teams - losing to Boone by only 12 points (they scored 29 points as they were uncontested in the diving competition). All but one of our girls swam as many events as they possibly could, and every one of them scored points for the team. Because every event was scored to the final place, we tried a new strategy: loading up all the events to not have a single empty slot. This meant some girls were swimming new events or events they aren't exactly comfortable in. It paid off - we were able to hang with a team with a much deeper roster than us. We led Boone at the halfway point, but diving proved too much for us to overcome in the end.
Geordyn Webster and Lexi Goodell went 1st & 2nd respectively in the 200 IM - Geordyn had a solid win and Lexi overcame 2 other swimmers in the breaststroke to take 2nd place points.
Arabella Shepard and Clarissa Carolan (both coming off of previous individual wins in the evening in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly) took 1st and 2nd in the 100 backstroke, leading the pack the entire race.
Amanda Cardenas powered through in a tough field for the 500 freestyle to grab 6th place points. And Carlie Spore dropped 4 seconds in her 100 breaststroke.
Back at it next Thursday for a dual meet at Oskaloosa.
