Sports : Area runners begin season at Wartburg high school track meet; VS relay teams win 5 medals

4 x 800 relay champs at Wartburg HS meet: From left: Cole Tharp, Matthew Andreesen, Nolan Haisman, David Lapan-Islas. Five Vinton-Shellsburg relay teams, including the first-place boys 4 x 800 and 4 x 200 relay teams, earned medals at the Wartburg high school meet in Waverly on Tuesday. The 4 x 200 team, which included Will Dudley, Justin Bartz, Keegan Thompson and Blake Bohnsack, won with a time of 1:35.72. The 4 x 800 team (Cole Tharp, Nolan Haisman, David Lapan-Islas and Matt Andreesen) finished in 8:53.28. The boys 4 x 400 team finished third, while the VS girls 4 x 200 team finished in fifth and the 4 x400 team earned sixth place. The same girls,Hannah Kalous, Sarah Schminke, Hanna Timmerman, and Becca Steffen, ran both relays for VS.
