The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are in third place in Class 3A, District 5, with two weeks left on the regular-season schedule.
A win by the Vikings tonight virtually assures them of spot in the post-season action that begins Wednesday, Oct. 27.
Undefeated District 5 leaders Union and Marion play tonight, with the winner likely to be the District Champion.
Vinton and Maquoketa are tied for third with identical 3-2 District records. But because the Vikings defeated the Cardinals, 38-35, in Week 3, they are considered the third place team.
In fifth and sixth place are DeWitt Central and Western Dubuque, at 2-3.
If V-S and Maquoketa win tonight, both teams are guaranteed playoff spots. If either loses, then DeWitt or W. Dubuque could have an opportunity to gain a playoff spot in the final week.
If Maqoketa loses to Western Dubuqe tonight, they would have to defeat Marion to have a chance at the playoffs. Likewise, should the Vikings lose tonight at home against DeWitt Central, they would have to win at Union next week to keep their playoff hopes alive.
