Vinton-Shellsburg senior golfer Tyler Stueck will continue his career into the collegiate level.

Stueck, the son of Tom and Cindi Stueck, has signed a Letter of Intent to attend college and play golf for Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids.

VS Coach Chad Pettyjohn joined the Stuecks and Mount Mercy Coach Luke Slaymaker for the signing.

Last year, Stueck was one of the six top golfers in the Wamac West, with a 9-hole average of 41.5

"I'm real proud of Tyler," says Pettyjohn. "I am very excited for him and was glad I was there to be a part of it. One of his goals was to make it to the next level and his work ethic both in and out of our golf season has given him this opportunity."

At Mount Mercy, Stueck will be playing for a coach who was part of the 1998 Center Point-Urbana championship team as well as record-setting Mount Mercy player.

Viking 2016 season: Team sets State as goal

Coach Pettyjohn says the Tyler is part of a Viking team that has 17 golfers as practice begins for the 2016 season.

"We are off to a great and we return a lot of experience," he says. "There are five returning letter winners and I can see that some of our younger golfers have improved from last year."

So far, weather has allowed earlier outside practices for the team.

"This allows us to work on specific golf situations on course environments," says the Coach.

Goals

The team has set a few aims for the season, says Pettyjohn.

"Our goals remain pretty consistent with our last couple of years. We would like to get to 50 wins, win the Wamac West Divisional, place in the top 3 at the WaMaC Super Meet, and we want to qualify for the state tournament. I am very excited for the year and looking forward to seeing the guys develop and compete not only at meets, but at practice and push each other to be better."
