Two Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings won first place at the 8th Annual Jones Brothers Wrestling Invitational in Iowa Falls on Saturday.
Nick Hyland (138) had a first-round bye, continued his undefeated season with two falls and a major decision. His record is now 16-0 this season.
Navon Dunlap recorded three falls and a decision to win the 126-pound title.
Other Vikings to earn medals included: Brock Radeke, 2nd; Scott Betteron, 2nd; Kort Johnson, 2nd; Luke Radeke, 3rd; Carter Weeks, 3rd; John Betterton, 5th.
About the tournament and its namesakes:
The Jones brothers, Don and Ron, are the namesakes of the Iowa Falls-Alden high school wrestling tournament that started in 2008. For years Don coached the Iowa Falls middle school team and Ron went 15 seasons as head coach of the Iowa Falls High School wrestling program. The Cadets won seven conference titles under Ron Jones, posting a dual record of 134-43-3. Ron Jones was the 1983 Iowa prep Class 2-A coach of the year.
Ron was a member of Iowa State’s 1965 NCAA team title squad, the first of head coach Harold Nichols’ national championship teams. He was a two-time All-American at 130 pounds.
