Going up against the KCRG-TV Athlete of the Week -- quarterback Brandon Horbach -- the V-S Vikings traveled to South Tama High School on Friday, looking to rebound from their 21-7 opening loss to Benton Community.
Horbach had led his team to a 46-0 victory in their season opener. Against the Vikings, he also had a remarkable game, completing 28 of 40 passes for more than 300 yards and one touchdown pass.
But the Vikings scored early in the fourth quarter on Logan Williams' second touchdown of the night to take the lead, 26-21. Horbach and the Trojans went to work, moving the ball to the Viking 20 late in the game. But the Viking defense held, preserving the first win of the season.
This week, the Vikings host Maquekota.
During halftime of the varsity game, the members of the 1959 team (the class of 1960) will be honored. That team went 6-1-1 two straight years (1958 and 1959) and were WaMaC co-champions in 1959.
Several members of that team will be introduced Friday night, including Viking Hall of Fame members Mike Hibbs, Jack Mitchell and Ron Selken.
