Sports : Vikettes win four of last five; face Marion in Regional opener Thursday

Senior Night: Vikettes honored Brea Burroughs, Syd Robertson and Kathleen Steffen.

After winning four of five last week, including a come-from behind 6-5 last-inning thriller against Monticello, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes will spend the early part of this week preparing for post-season play.

The Vikettes followed last Tuesday's exciting win with a split against Williamsburg and two victories on Friday at the Alburnette tournament.

V-S travels to Marion on Thursday; the winner will travel to C.R. Xavier on Saturday, July 11. The Class 4, Region 6 bracket also includes Knoxville, Pella and top-ranked Indianola. The winner of the July 14 regional final will advance to the State Tournament.

The young Vikettes honored the teams three seniors last week: Catcher Kathleen Steffen, pitcher/infielder Brea Burroughs and outfielder Sydney Robertson.

Robertson leads the Vikettes with 57 hits and a .452 batting average. Steffen's team-leading 31 RBI and a .352 batting average compliment her strong defense behind the plate. And Burroughs leads V-S hurlers with 9 wins on the season.
