This is an alternate shot tournament; the boys tee off from the odd holes and the girls from the even holes. From then until the finish of the hole, it is alternate shot. Forty-nine teams competed in 2A this year. In cases of ties, places are decided by carding back.
There are only two divisions for this tournament decided by school enrollment. Vinton-Shellsburg is in the large school division. Various courses host this event so it is tough to compare scores; each course provides its own unique challenges.
Since the year 2000, juniors Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck’s 82 is the lowest score and highest finish of any Vinton-Shellsburg team. In 2007 Laura (Wilberg) Dierks and Matt Sima shot 83 at Otter Creek, Ankeny, which until then was the lowest score since 2000; they placed 17th..
For Ms. Tandy, this has been the year of being just one stroke short. She missed a medal at the State girls golf by one stroke, and again yesterday the team of Stueck/Tandy had the same experience.
The competition in this event is very tough! There are many State qualifiers competing. Both of our teams shot well. We had three juniors compete and for graduate, Daniel Janssen, this was his final high school golf experience. I was very proud of our four competitors and know they enjoyed the experience. It was great to see their team work.. They represented Vinton-Shellsburg very well.
