"What a great year," says V-S girls track coach Heather Kalous, summarizing the team's season as well as their performance at last week's State Track Meet.
The Vikings and Vikettes both did very well at state; many set personal bests while earning team points and medals.
"They did exactly what they needed to do," says Coach Kalous. "Their times were the best of the year. Lily broke her 3000 and 1500 school record again. The Sprint Medley team of Sydney Robertson, Hannah, Kalous. Dawne Schminke, and Payton Leonard crushed their record they had set at districts. And how exciting it was to have Dawne in the finals of the 100M."
Vikette Dawne Schminke qualified for the finals in the 100M; she finished in 8th in the prelims with a time of 12.881 and was 6th in the finals with a time of 13.35.
The girls sprint medley relay team finished 11th at State with a time of 1:51.01.
The Viking 4 x 100 team (Juniors Cole Garwood, Nick Hyland, Jordan Womochil and Joel Barnes) finished in third in preliminaries and 4th in Saturday's finals, setting a school record. They were the only team in the Class 3A finals without any seniors in their line-up.
Other Viking and Vikette results from State include:
Tyler Bartz, long jump; 8th, 20’6.5”

"I am very proud of the way that our kids represented themselves and our school," says boys coach Aric Chvala. "The environment at the state meet is really tough to beat, so many athletes from all over that also excel in other sports all in the same place at the same time makes it unique and fun to be a part of. I am very happy for those that had never experienced it before to get that chance, and it is a great way to send out our seniors. It is sad to see the seniors that we are losing go, they are the most consistent hardest working kids we have on the team and they are going to be next to impossible to immediately replace. The most exciting thing for me as a coach is seeing all of the work that these kids have put in finally has a payoff for them. It is also very rewarding that some of our guys are already talking about next year and some pretty big goals and aspirations. I hope that they can take this experience and success and roll it into the next seasons, they are a very good group of guys and are ready to be great in whatever they do, it has been my pleasure to work with them."
One disappointment for the Vikings this year was the injury suffered by senior Derek Dinderman. He was ahead of the school record pace in the 3200M when he suffered a knee injury on the slippery track and could not finish the race.
"After a couple days of ice and trying to regain mobility he gave it a shot in the 800, but the injury was a little too much to overcome. It is a horrible way for someone who has been so good for so long at Vinton-Shellsburg," said Coach Chvala. "Derek will be sorely missed."
