The 8th grade girls track team ended their season with their home meet on May 12, finishing second in the team scoring. For the season they brought home 4 team championships, including the WaMaC championship, and two second place finishes with one meet being cancelled. The meets consisted of 8 teams competing in 4 field events, 3 hurdle events, 6 relays and 5 individual running events.

At West Delaware the team scored 99 points tied with Marion with 99 points. At South Tama the Little Vikettes scored 116 points over 2nd place Grinnell with 113, at Independence the Vinton-Shellsburg team had 114 points to Center Point/Urbana 112, at Clear Creek the team finished 2nd with 102.5 points behind Mid Prairie with 126 . The girls were WaMaC champions with 102 points over second place Marion with 99.5 points, then finished 2nd to Marion on the home track 120 to 100.

Three new records were set for the 8th grade record book. The Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Kelli Cox, Blakeley Dlouhy, Allissa Hendryx and Maddux Erhardt set a new record at 1:16.11. Sarah Schminke broke a record, which has stood since 1972 in the 200 Meter dash, at 27.78 seconds. Grace Horst set a new record in the 1500 Meter run previously held by her sister(Lily) at 5:18.24. There were several other events which were very close to records., including the long jump, 100 and 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run. All members of the team made contributions to the team effort. The girls had a great season and should be proud of their work. Track work improves students’ over-all health, improves athletic abilities and prepares athletes for other competition in their future athletic events.
