After playing a scoreless first quarter in its Homecoming game vs. Independence, Vinton-Shellsburg fell behind, 14-0 after two second quarter touchdowns by the Mustangs.
Late in the second quarter, QB Jordan Womochil connected with Austin Bohnsack for a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 14-6.
But the second half played out like the first, with the Mustangs scoring two more touchdowns. The Vikings scored just once more, on a three-yard run by Brandon Geiger.
Womochil was 10 of 14 in pass completions. He gave the Vikings a chance to get back in the game with an interception in the third quarter, which he returned 22 yards to the Mustang 5-yard-line. But the Vikings were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity. The Mustangs won, 29-12, dropping the Vikings to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in district play. VS hosts the other Vikings of District 3A-3, next week, Decorah (3-2, 1-1).
The Viking freshmen, however, won their game 28-13.
