Sports : Vikings defeat Independence; Vikettes lose to Mustangs in Independence

Both Vinton-Shellsburg varsity basketball teams are 2-3 on the season after last night's games vs. Independence.
The Vikings built an early lead vs. the Mustangs in Vinton, and won 61-56.
The Vikettes, however, struggled early, and were down 12-0 before scoring their first two points of the game with one second left in the first period. They played the Mustangs evenly over the next three frames, but lost at Independence, 41-32. Sophomore Anna Sagan led the Vikettes with 17 points. Junior Derek Dinderman led the Vikings with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Vikettes play South Tama Thursday at home before ending their December schedule at Anamosa. The Vikings host Anamosa Friday.
