After a rough first week, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings basketball team won its first game of the season, defeating South Tama in overtime by one point, 57-56.
Down by six at half-time and by four at the end of the third period Monday night on their home court, the Vikings rallied to even the score.
Free throws by Nolan Sagan very late in the fourth period tied the game; another by Sagan sealed the win for the Vikings.
Sagan's double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) led the Vikings; Tanner Spies added 12 points and three steals.
Last week, the Vikings lost in overtime at West Delaware and then struggled in the final period in a loss to Williamsburg at home.
VS continues its string of home games on Friday when the Vikings host Dyersville Beckman. The home stand continues through the Christmas break; the Vikings host Independence Dec. 17, and Anamosa Dec. 20. The Vikings are on the road for seven of the 10 games scheduled for January.
