Long-time Vinton-Shellsburg girls basketball coach Harold Shepherd will make his first appearance in Vinton as the coach of the West Delaware girls basketball team when the Vikettes host the Hawks on Tuesday night.

Shepherd coached Vinton and later Vinton-Shellsburg, from the 1970s through 2005. He led the Vikettes to 19 Wamac titles and two state championships, in 1984 and 1995. He later spent three years as an assistant coach at William Jewell University in Missouri, where the head coach is former VS player Jill Rector Cress. In 2010 Shepherd took the head coaching job at WD.

According to the Iowa Girls Athletic Coaches Association, Shepherd has compiled 745 wins after 47 seasons of coaching.

The Vikettes and Hawks will play freshman/sophomore, JV and varsity games Tuesday evening in Vinton
