Sophomore Gunner Tranel pitched a complete game, five-inning shutout as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings defeated Union 11-0 in Game 1 of a double-header in La Porte City.
The Vikings also won the nightcap, 14-6. In that game, sophomore Bryce Burroughs pitched into the fourth inning. Burroughs held the Knights scoreless in the first and third innings, but a combination of walks, errors and three hits contributed to a 6-run second inning. Kody Seaton came on in relief in the fourth inning. He struck out seven and the Viking defense came up with two double plays over the last three and one-half innings to keep the Knights from scoring again.
The Vikings play at Oelwein Monday night. They host Waverly Tuesday for Parents Night. District play begins Friday, as Vinton hosts the four-team regional contest. The Vikings play Independence. Union plays Center Point-Urbana. The winners of those two games will play the following Monday, July 19, to see which team advances to the Sub-State game in Van Horne Wednesday, July 21.
