Dear Editor:

I wondered about the reaction in Vinton since AmeriCorps NCCC was killed last week by DOGE and read what sounded like a cheerful "So long AmeriCorps, it was great knowing you!" from Mayor Bud Maynard. Thousands of team members and staff lost their jobs and community service projects across the country were abandoned. The Vinton campus, which could have been called "the HQ for helping American citizens," will probably decay for years while people argue about finding the money to turn it into something far less meaningful.

Not a word from Maynard on how Trump and Musk took a chainsaw to a respected and altruistic organization with such gleeful and profound ignorance.

My son, a college grad who wanted to spend a year helping others, was among those sent home. His team had to leave a job that benefitted children to drive several states back to IA for a plane ticket. They were disgusted and distraught.

My son came home to a loving family and a place to live, while many volunteers were themselves disadvantaged. What they shared was a desire to improve the lives of Americans and expand their own viewpoints. AmeriCorps responded to natural disasters, taught classes, rejuvenated natural habitats, supported healthcare services and built homes for veterans. They worked their asses off for roughly $100 bucks a week while living together in close quarters. Anyone who thinks these were spoiled kids who took easy, well-paid jobs to coast for awhile do not know what they are talking about.

Thank you Vinton for hosting my son; he said the people were lovely. Thank you AmeriCorps for 32 years of dedicated service to our country. What happened to you is absolutely shameful. I hope all of you who were so cruelly axed don't lose your desire to help because we need you now more than ever.

JG April 23, 2025, 7:55 am Elon just told his share holders he was stepping back at DOGE but needed to stay at the white house to make sure the fraud and waste that he stopped doesn't come back. So which is Americorps? A program for volunteers young and old.
When you lose volunteers you have to now pay for that labor. It will fall on FEMA and the other agencies that these young people helped. Did we consider that?
Don't worry, as stated by a commenter in a previous piece about this issue. They can find something else...
Unfortunately ignorance is cutting off your leg and thinking you lost weight. Intentional ignorance is seeing the problem and cheering it on because the people creating the silliness have the right party letter after their name.
If you don't think this will really affect the community of Vinton, drive by the old east school and imagine that look and the eventual cost of building removal, times 1000%. We are talking millions in future maintenance and or eventual demolition. These buildings will be coming back to the city at some point, the only question is what will be left of them and how much it will cost us. But hey we'll figure it out. Keep cutting, Elon!! Take the other leg and we'll be in great shape.
God bless those who step up to truly help their community and country.
RS April 23, 2025, 11:52 am Heather,
I, along with many others in Vinton sincerely thanks your son for being a part of Americorps. If you read my column Trump Report this week you see my connection to Americorps with my work with RSVP Senior Corps in Iowa City. I understand the value of community service and appreciate those who unselfishly do the work.

I am also bewildered at some of the comments, some from our city leaders, who would not publicly connect DOGE and Trump to the closing. This area has their heads in the sand about what is going on to our country. Even when those random cuts start effecting the local community, they are silent.

I know that there are those who oppose Trump/Musk but too afraid to show their support for fear of receiving the type of comments that I routinely get with my column. Then there are others that no matter what Trump does, they agree with it. There are those who spend more time regurgitating their complaints against President Biden and fail to see what is going on right under their noses.

Please accept my apologies for the lack of public support and my deepest sympathies to your son and the other Americorp volunteers. My only hope is that the public wakes up to the destruction going on before the damage is too extensive to fix.
Thank you.

KG April 23, 2025, 1:35 pm I agree 100%. They were such an asset to our community when our town experienced natural disasters. Thank you Americorp for all you did. Shame on our government for doing you wrong
JS April 23, 2025, 2:44 pm One writer suggested Americorps was free labor. The budget for the corps was $38 million in taxpayer money. The government is deeply in debt. Some have indicated 38 or so trillion is beyond our ability to tax our way out.
Tough times mean making tough decisions
I have been laid off three times, thefirst thing to do is find another job.
JG April 23, 2025, 4:19 pm $38 million to americorps. $38 billion, with B, for Elon Musk companies in government contracts, subsidies, loans, and tax credits. Yep makes sense. I hope the independent contractors that will be needed to replace the AmeriCorps members labor are going to charge less than $100 a week per worker so we can continue to save.
GB April 24, 2025, 12:10 am John is exactly correct. While I am confident Biden did not know it or much of anything else but our country has to make cuts. Trump is playing the bad guy and doing what has to be done. This country can't keep paying for every social program someone wants.
I am thankful for the waste and fraud Musk has uncovered and it is Trump and Musk who are going to save Social Security and Medicare. Only a fool could look at the Trillions of US Dollars in debt we are and honestly say, "let's keep spending money we don't have."
Biden had the chance to save a lot of programs had he not been blowing the money on stupid programs in every corner of the world.
Now tough choices need to be made.
TT April 24, 2025, 1:01 pm How many vehicles, 15 passenger vans and others, probably mostly new, was in the parking lot on the south side of the former braille school most of time? 10, 15 or 20? Big waste, but think of the waste nationally and around the world.
GB April 24, 2025, 10:18 pm Exactly! It looked like a buy here pay here dealership with no business.
