Dear Editor,

County Attorney David Thompson has distorted the record by misrepresenting his opponent's trial experience.

In the October 7th article written by county attorney David Thompson he wrongfully suggests that Ray Lough lacks major trial experience.

After graduating from law school Ray was hired as a public defender for the Nashville Metropolitan area. He worked there for five years and in that time represented 4,614 individuals. Ray handled hundreds of bench trials and four felony murder cases. The most challenging of these cases was State vs Leslie and State vs Collier. Mr. Leslie was not found guilty and Mr. Collier was convicted of involuntary manslaughter instead of first-degree murder as alleged.

After leaving Nashville he went to work in the Linn County public defender's office where he again handled several bench trials and two felony jury trials. In one of these jury trials the offense of willful injury was alleged. Ray's client was acquitted in this case. He also, along with another member of the office, tried the case of State vs Conner. Mr. Conner was charged with two counts of felony murder and arson.

He has had other significant trial experience with his appointment as special prosecutor for Tama County wherein he successfully prosecuted an individual for assaulting a Tama County deputy.

Along with these examples Ray served a the staff attorney for Bethany Christian Services for five years. While there he successfully prosecuted over 130 terminations of parental rights cases. This also included the handling of the appeals of some of these cases. Over the past ten years, his practice has shifted to one that provides less opportunity for trials but he has had several bench trials mostly in juvenile court.

The issue of who has more experience should not be in dispute as we both are experienced enough to do the job, that is not the issue in this race.

Trish Lough

JT October 12, 2022, 8:26 pm And exactly how many criminal cases did Mr. Lough personally take to trial, and win while he was Benton County Attorney in the 1990's?
MR October 13, 2022, 12:52 pm It’s 2022! I would agree that both parties have experience. Ray has been practicing law for 30 plus years, as former county attorney, operating his own law firm, just to name a couple. I don’t feel this campaign is ONLY about how many trials an attorney has represented. Ray will support all residents of Benton County and hold ALL people accountable for their actions. Lets support Ray on November 8th. Let’s make Benton County great again!!!
JT October 13, 2022, 3:33 pm Ray was literally given the County Attorney job by Board of Supervisors appointment in the 1990's due to a vacancy and then lost it by a 2-1 margin to David Thompson due to his ineffectiveness in the position. Republican Sheriff Ken Popenhagen recruited Thompson to run for the position because it was that bad. Please don't repeat history because it's been forgotten.
LG October 14, 2022, 7:33 am Thank you Trish Lough for clarifying Ray’s experience! I have known Ray my whole life and I have never known anyone more determined, honest and respectful that will represent our county in the best ways and be very diligent in this position! Vote for Ray on Election Day!
LF October 14, 2022, 12:43 pm I think Ray Lough would be very good at this job. I think he will be fair and honest, which I believe is great to have. We are due for a change in the office! I believe he will handle things by not who you are but for what you’ve done!
GS October 17, 2022, 7:49 pm Disclosure, don't know Mr. Thompson but from reading his mealy mouthed defense of the Board's disregard of the Veterans Preference laws it appears he's likely to cost your county a lot of scratch if that screw up goes to court. But what's the difference between fighting a war and getting wounded serving Uncle Sam or fetching beers at the family BBQ...I'm sure he'll come up with a credible defense of that hiring action.
DV October 21, 2022, 9:55 pm Mr.Shepherd, the credible defense for the hiring of Mr. Haefner is that Mr. Haefner's qualifications and education were better suited to all of the requirements of the job. The Veteran's preference bill only offers Vets an advantage if qualifications were equal. They were not.
MR October 23, 2022, 3:37 am Deborah Vaughan you’re absolutely right, they aren’t equal!!! One isn’t a relative to one of the board members
MR October 24, 2022, 11:21 am Deborah I think you’re missing the point. First of all, were you on the hiring committee? Did you see the applicants qualifications? This whole issue is NOT about being a democrat or republican. Deborah, do you think it’s ok how David Thompson treated Kevin? Do you think it’s ok for the human resource gal not to do her job? David Thompson should be holding the human resource gal liable for not complying with proper procedures.
